Born in Berkeley CA, Safiya Fredericks began acting at the Young Actors Workshop in Richmond, CA. She hails from a family steeped in musical and social justice traditions including her uncle the legendary Taj Majal, aunt French singer Carole Fredericks, her father Samuel of the iconic Oakland Art Gallery, and her mother Georgia who worked as a teacher and Social Worker. Safiya studied acting at UC Irvine and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She has worked steadily in theatre at such institutions as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Geffen Playhouse, ACT, Yale Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, South Coast Repertory, Magic Theatre and was the recipient of the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Featured Actress for her work in Black Odyssey at CalShakes.
